Festival Kreol on La Digue in La Digue
La Digue's island-specific programming within Festival Kreol, Seychelles' annual celebration of Kreol Seselwa language and culture held each October since 1985. Alongside the flagship Mahe events, La Digue hosts its own smaller-scale Creole market, music and dance activities as part of the same nationally coordinated week.
Festival Kreol was established in 1985 to celebrate Kreol Seselwa's recognition as a national language under Seychelles' 1981 constitution, and from its early years the festival was organized as a national, multi-island event rather than one confined to the capital, since Creole language and culture belong as much to La Digue's small resident community as to Mahe's larger population.
