The story

Seychelles Sea Turtle Festival in Mahe

Seychelles Sea Turtle Festival is an annual conservation-education event organised by the NGO Sea Turtle Friends Seychelles since 2013, rotating between island venues such as La Digue and Silhouette. Built around school assemblies, talks and hands-on activities, it teaches children about hawksbill and green turtle nesting on Seychelles' beaches, with past editions themed around direct climate action for sea turtles.

Seychelles' granite and coralline islands host some of the Indian Ocean's most important nesting grounds for hawksbill turtles, and increasingly for green turtles, with beaches on La Digue, Silhouette, Praslin and the outer atolls attracting monitoring programmes run by conservation groups and resort partners for decades.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Rather than a single fixed venue, the festival travels: its seventh edition in 2019 was hosted at La Digue school under the theme Climate action for sea turtles, while its 2022 edition moved to Silhouette island, where Hilton Seychelles Labriz partnered with the Island Conservation Society and Island Academy to host it for the first time

02

The mystery stays covered

That rotation lets the festival reach different turtle-nesting communities directly rather than asking children to travel to a central location

03

The city starts moving

When the Covid-19 pandemic made in-person gatherings impossible in 2020, Sea Turtle Friends Seychelles adapted by running a virtual conference instead of cancelling outright, keeping the annual cycle unbroken through the pandemic years and underscoring how central the event has become to the organisation's calendar
