The story

Singapore Dragon Boat Festival in Bedok Reservoir/Marina Bay

Singapore Dragon Boat Festival is the Singapore Dragon Boat Association's annual race event tied to the traditional Dragon Boat Festival, held around late June at Bedok Reservoir with past editions also at Marina Bay. Crews race 500m in decorated dragon boats through heats, repechage, semi-final, and final rounds across open, women's, mixed, corporate, school, and international categories.

The Singapore Dragon Boat Festival is the Singapore Dragon Boat Association's flagship annual race, held around late June each year in step with the lunar calendar's Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, which traditionally falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The race format itself is the festival's centrepiece: teams paddle traditional dragon boats fitted with a carved dragon head and tail, steered to the rhythm set by an onboard drummer, competing over a standardised 500m course through a full heats-to-final bracket

02

The mystery stays covered

The event draws a wide mix of crews, from serious open and international teams to corporate and school groups, giving it a broader participatory base than a purely elite competition

03

The city starts moving

Off the water, the festival keeps its link to the Dragon Boat Festival's food traditions alive through bak zhang, glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves, including Nyonya versions distinctive to Singapore's Peranakan community
