The story

Detva Folklore Festival in Detva

Folklorne slavnosti pod Polanou is Slovakia's oldest large-scale folk festival, held every July in Detva beneath the Polana massif in central Slovakia. Since 1966 it has gathered singers, dancers and musicians from the Podpolanie shepherd region, filling a natural amphitheater with three days of traditional performance, craft markets and regional food.

Detva lies in the folds of the Polana volcanic massif in central Slovakia, a region historically built around sheep herding and the seasonal movement of flocks into the highlands each summer.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Detva sits at the heart of Podpolanie, a region famed for elaborate wood-carved shepherd axes (valasky), decorated fujara flutes and distinctive men's embroidered costumes, and the festival exists specifically to keep that local repertoire alive rather than present generic Slovak folklore

02

The mystery stays covered

The city of Detva has organized it since 1993, building on an amphitheater program where Friday belongs to local ensembles, Saturday to groups from across Slovakia, and Sunday to expatriate Slovak communities and a closing gala

03

The city starts moving

Alongside Vychodna and the Myjava festival, it is considered one of the three pillars of Slovak folklore celebration, and its 59th edition in 2026 is expected to draw thousands from Slovakia and abroad
