Kežmarok European Folk Craft Festival in Kežmarok

The European Folk Craft Festival, known locally as EĽRO, fills Kežmarok's historic streets on the second weekend of July. Founded in 1990 as the first event of its kind in former Czechoslovakia, it gathers master artisans from across Europe who sell and demonstrate traditional techniques while folk ensembles, falconers and street performers entertain the crowds.

In the summer of 1990, only months after the fall of Czechoslovakia's communist government, a group of organizers in the Spiš region town of Kežmarok staged something that had not really existed before: a festival built entirely around watching craftsmen work, not just buying what they had already made.
