Myjava International Folklore Festival in Myjava
The Medzinarodny folklorny festival Myjava is one of Slovakia's three flagship folklore festivals, held each June in the town of Myjava on the Moravian-Slovak border. Tracing its roots to 1956 regional celebrations and rooted in the Trnovce amphitheater since 1976, it brings together Slovak ensembles and invited international groups for a multi-day program of Kopanice-region song, dance and craft.
Myjava sits in the Biele Karpaty foothills on the border between Slovakia and Moravia, a landscape of scattered hillside farmsteads known as the Kopanice rather than clustered villages, and that dispersed settlement pattern shaped a folklore tradition distinct from the folk culture of Slovakia's lowland regions.
