The story

Spišské folklórne slávnosti in Spišské Podhradie

Spisske folklorne slavnosti is the largest and oldest folk festival of the Spis region, historically staged at Spissky salas above Spisske Podhradie on the last June weekend. From its 51st edition the festival relocated its main venue to Podlesok in nearby Hrabusice within the Slovak Paradise, while remaining closely tied to Spisske Podhradie's cultural calendar and regional identity.

Spisske Podhradie grew up in the shadow of Spissky hrad, one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe, in a region historically settled by Slovak, German-speaking Zips and Rusyn communities whose overlapping traditions gave Spis a folk culture distinct from other parts of Slovakia.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival represents Central and Lower Spis specifically, a region shaped by German, Slovak, Rusyn and Roma cultural overlap under the shadow of Spissky hrad, one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe, which gives its repertoire a mixed character distinct from festivals further south or west in Slovakia

02

The mystery stays covered

It combines staged song and dance programs with participatory elements unusual among Slovak folklore festivals, including horse rides, skill competitions and dance classes that let visitors try steps themselves rather than only watch

03

The city starts moving

The move of its main venue from Spissky salas to Podlesok in the Slovak Paradise after 50 editions marked a deliberate reinvention of the format, pairing folklore with the region's dramatic karst scenery
