The story

Podroháč Folklore Festival in Zuberec

The Podrohac Folklore Festival, known in Slovak as Podrohacske folklorne slavnosti, is an international folklore festival held each August at the Museum of the Orava Village amphitheater in Zuberec, running since 1975, making it one of the oldest folklore festivals in Slovakia. The name refers to the nearby Rohace mountain group in the Western Tatras, beneath which Zuberec sits.

Zuberec sits beneath the Rohace, a dramatic mountain group in the Western Tatras whose name gives this festival its own, an old Slovak turn of phrase, pod Rohacom zijem, meaning I live beneath the Rohac, even lent its title to a local book about the region.

01

The place changes

First held in 1975, this festival has run for close to five decades, placing it among the oldest folklore festivals in Slovakia according to its own dedicated Wikipedia entry

02

The mystery stays covered

Its venue is itself a cultural institution: the amphitheater at the Museum of the Orava Village, an open-air ethnographic museum preserving historic wooden buildings from the region, gives performances a setting already immersed in the material folk culture on stage

03

The city starts moving

Since 1991, the festival has run alongside a companion event, Ozivene oravske remesla, or Revived Orava Crafts, pairing performance with hands-on craft demonstration

04

The water draws everyone in

One figure, Viliam Gruska, authored twenty-two of its programs between 1978 and 2005
