The story

Druga Godba in Ljubljana

Druga Godba is a world and alternative music festival in Ljubljana, founded in 1984 as the first festival in former Yugoslavia to introduce reggae, African music, and other 'Third World' popular styles to the region. Presented in long-standing partnership with Cankarjev Dom, it is Slovenia's only music event to feature artists from at least four continents every year.

In 1984, in a Yugoslavia that still had a decade left before its dissolution, Druga Godba became the first festival in the country to bring what was then called 'Third World' popular music, reggae, African music, and related styles, to regional audiences.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Druga Godba's defining claim is historical: it was the first festival in the former Yugoslavia to bring 'Third World' popular music styles, including reggae and African music, to regional audiences, and more than 40 editions later it remains the only music event in Slovenia to guarantee artists from at least four continents every single year

02

The mystery stays covered

Programming deliberately blends genres, mixing hip hop, Ghanaian highlife, Saharan blues, indie bossa nova, and ethnojazz rather than sticking to a single world music formula

03

The city starts moving

The festival's standing has been recognized internationally: Songlines magazine named it among the 25 best festivals in the world for five consecutive years, and the City of Ljubljana honored it with a Prešeren or Župančič cultural award in 2006
