Ljubljana Festival on the Ljubljanica in Ljubljana
Ljubljana Festival on the Ljubljanica is a boat-based concert series held as part of the wider Ljubljana Festival, staging young musicians on tourist boats along the Ljubljanica river through the old town. Now in its tenth consecutive year in its current format, it revives a tradition of musical river regattas first organised by Ljubljana's amateur musicians in 1704.
Ljubljana Festival on the Ljubljanica draws its concept from a specific historical event: in 1704, a group of amateur musicians in Ljubljana organised a concert on the water to mark the founding of what would become the Academia Philharmonicorum, an institution recognised as one of the earliest philharmonic societies in Europe and a forerunner of today's Slovenian Philharmonic.
