The story

MetalDays in Tolmin/Velenje

MetalDays was a heavy metal festival held at Tolmin's river confluence from 2004 to 2022, having started as Metalcamp before its 2013 rebrand. It moved to Lake Velenje for a final 2023 edition before being discontinued, with a new festival called Tolminator continuing the metal tradition at the original Tolmin site.

For nearly two decades, Tolmin's stretch of the Soča Valley was synonymous with one of Europe's most distinctive heavy metal gatherings, a festival that began in 2004 under the name Metalcamp before rebranding to MetalDays in 2013.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

For nearly two decades MetalDays built a reputation as one of Europe's ecology-focused metal gatherings, developing sustainability initiatives from 2008 onward that made it, by organizers' own description, among the cleanest and most environmentally advanced music festivals in the world

02

The mystery stays covered

Its Tolmin home at Sotočje, where the Tolminka meets the Soča beneath the Julian Alps, combined extreme-music programming with mountain river swimming, an unusual pairing that gave the festival its distinct identity within Europe's metal touring circuit

03

The city starts moving

Known as Metalcamp from its 2004 founding until the name changed in 2013, the festival drew an international metalhead audience for whom the location itself, described as one of the cleanest rivers in Europe, was as much a draw as the lineup

04

The water draws everyone in

After 19 years in Tolmin, the festival relocated to Lake Velenje for 2023, its final edition, before organizers discontinued it in 2024, closing an era that helped make Tolmin one of the epicenters of the European metal scene
