The story

Hermanus Whale Festival in Hermanus

The Hermanus Whale Festival is an annual eco-tourism event held at the end of September in Hermanus, a Western Cape coastal town known for exceptional land-based whale watching. It celebrates the seasonal arrival and calving of Southern Right Whales in Walker Bay through an Eco-Marine Village, environmental education and craft and food stalls.

Each year, Southern Right Whales migrate into the sheltered waters of Walker Bay off Hermanus to calve and mate, coming close enough to shore that they can be watched directly from coastal cliff paths without a boat, a rarity among the world's whale-watching destinations.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Hermanus is one of the world's best locations for watching whales directly from land, and the festival is built around that natural fact rather than staged entertainment: its core programming, an Eco-Marine Village and environmental presentations, keeps a consistent eco-tourism and conservation focus rather than treating the whales as a backdrop for an unrelated event

02

The mystery stays covered

A smaller precursor event, the Kalfiefees or Calf Festival, runs earlier in August to mark the arrival of the season's first whale calves, effectively giving Hermanus two linked celebrations, one for arrival and one for the height of the season, both built around the same Southern Right Whale migration
