The story

947 Ride Joburg in Johannesburg

947 Ride Joburg, formerly the 94.7 Cycle Challenge, is a one-day road cycling event held on the fourth weekend of October in Johannesburg. Founded in 1997 and now in its 28th edition, it is the world's second-largest timed cycle race after the Cape Argus, drawing between 20,000 and 30,000 riders over a 94.7-kilometre course.

When Johannesburg's 94.7 FM radio station backed a new one-day cycling event in 1997, organisers had no way of knowing it would grow into the second-largest timed cycle race on earth, trailing only Cape Town's own Cape Argus.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The race takes its distance and part of its name from Johannesburg's 947 radio station, one of its long-running sponsors, and closes major city roads for a single Sunday so tens of thousands of cyclists can ride a course that would otherwise be impossible to access on two wheels

02

The mystery stays covered

A companion Ride Joburg Mountain Bike Challenge, offering 30-kilometre and 55-kilometre off-road distances, runs the weekend before, and a 40-kilometre fun ride was added in 2012, giving the event three distinct formats across back-to-back weekends rather than a single race day
