The story

Joburg Marathon in Johannesburg

The Joburg City Marathon, formerly the Jackie Gibson Marathon, is hosted annually by the Johannesburg Harriers Athletics Club, one of South Africa's oldest running clubs. Runners start at Klipriviersberg Recreation Centre in Kibler Park and race 42.2, 21.1 or 10 kilometres past landmarks including the Nelson Mandela Bridge.

Long before it carried the name Joburg City Marathon, the race that starts each year at Klipriviersberg Recreation Centre in Kibler Park was known as the Jackie Gibson Marathon, a fixture on the Johannesburg Harriers Athletics Club calendar.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Billed by city officials as Gauteng's most beautiful marathon, the route sends runners across the M1 freeway and over the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Braamfontein, turning closed-off highway lanes and an architectural landmark into part of the race course rather than mere scenery

02

The mystery stays covered

The event welcomes walkers on the 10- and 21

03

The city starts moving

kilometre distances alongside competitive runners, and its early-morning 5:30am assembly and staggered cut-offs, 10am at the 26-kilometre mark and a 12pm finish deadline, are built to accommodate everyone from elite finishers to six-hour walkers on the same closed roads
