The story

Journey to Jazz Prince Albert in Prince Albert

Journey to Jazz is a jazz festival in the small Karoo town of Prince Albert, run by the Prince Albert Community Trust (PACT) as both a music event and a fundraiser for youth development programmes reaching more than 2,000 young people in Prince Albert, Leeu Gamka and Klaarstroom. It is led by artistic director Kyle Shepherd and creative director Brenda Sisane, with Professor Thuli Madonsela as patron.

Prince Albert is a small town tucked against the northern side of the Swartberg Pass in the Western Cape Karoo, the kind of place with a population small enough that a single non-profit organisation can plausibly reach every young person in it.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Journey to Jazz is unusual among South African jazz festivals for being structurally tied to a specific social mission: it exists to fund and celebrate PACT's year-round youth development work in Prince Albert and the neighbouring settlements of Leeu Gamka and Klaarstroom, reaching over 2,000 young people

02

The mystery stays covered

Its creative leadership carries serious credentials, artistic director Kyle Shepherd is one of South Africa's foremost jazz pianists and composers, creative director Brenda Sisane is the founder of Jazzday South Africa and a longtime advocate for International Jazz Day, and its patron, Professor Thuli Madonsela, is a nationally prominent public figure

03

The city starts moving

The festival programme includes a specific cultural strand, the Prince Albert Riel Dancers, connecting it to the Karoo region's own folk-dance heritage alongside its jazz programming
