The story

Soweto Marathon in Soweto/Johannesburg

The Soweto Marathon is an annual 42-kilometer road race through Soweto, South Africa's most populous township, run every November since 1991. Long sponsored by African Bank, the race combines competitive distance running with a route past the area's landmark liberation-history sites, drawing club and charity runners from across the country.

Soweto, an abbreviation of South Western Townships, was established under apartheid-era urban planning as a set of segregated residential areas for Black South Africans on the edge of Johannesburg.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few marathons run through a single neighborhood with as dense a concentration of twentieth-century political history as Soweto: the route passes near Vilakazi Street, the only street once home to two Nobel Peace Prize laureates, and other sites tied to the anti-apartheid struggle

02

The mystery stays covered

Established in 1991, as South Africa's political transition was underway, the race has continued for more than three decades under sponsors including African Bank, and its men's course record of 2:16:28 was set in 2012

03

The city starts moving

For runners, it offers a marathon shaped as much by the township's streets, crowds and history as by the distance itself
