Cheonan Heungtaryeong Dance Festival in Cheonan
Cheonan's dance festival, built around the untranslatable Korean idea of heung, or spontaneous joy expressed through movement, has grown from a local event in the early 2000s into one of the country's largest performing arts festivals. A signature street parade fills Samgeori Park, alongside national and international dance competitions that draw teams from dozens of countries each autumn.
Korean has a word, heung, that resists easy translation: it describes a rush of joy or exuberance that spills outward into song and movement, the kind of feeling older generations associated with village gatherings and shared celebration.
