The story

Baekje Cultural Festival in Gongju/Buyeo

Gongju and Buyeo jointly host Korea's largest Baekje heritage festival, grown from a 1950s memorial rite honoring officials who died when the kingdom fell in 660. The event spans both former Baekje capitals with a reconstructed royal procession, a riverside lantern and starlight display, fireworks, and produce markets, covering the kingdom's Ungjin and Sabi periods rather than its earlier Hanseong-era capital.

Long before Seoul existed, the Baekje kingdom moved its capital twice as pressure from rival states pushed it south, first to Ungjin, the walled river city now called Gongju, and later to Sabi, present-day Buyeo, where it remained until the kingdom's fall in 660.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Unlike most heritage festivals built around a single site, this one is staged across two cities that were both, in turn, the real seat of Baekje power, giving it a geographic scope matched by few other Korean historical festivals

02

The mystery stays covered

Its origin as a solemn memorial rite for officials who died defending the kingdom gives the modern celebration an emotional foundation that predates the tourism-oriented programming layered on top over the following decades

03

The city starts moving

The nighttime lantern and starlight displays along the river add a visual spectacle that distinguishes it from the daytime-only reenactments typical of similar events elsewhere in the country
