Jeju Haenyeo Festival in Jeju Island
The Jeju Haenyeo Festival honors the island's free-diving women who harvest abalone and sea urchin without oxygen tanks, using a breathing technique called sumbisori. Held at the Haenyeo Museum near Gujwa-eup, it combines diving demonstrations, shamanist sea rituals, seafood tastings, and folk performances that celebrate a matrilineal tradition recognized by UNESCO.
Long before it became a festival, haenyeo diving was simply how many Jeju families survived.
