Sancheong Hwangmaesan Royal Azalea Festival in Sancheong
A spring flower festival centered on Hwangmaesan Mountain's royal azalea (cheoljjuk) blooms, which cover hundreds of thousands of square meters of upper slopes in pale pink each late April into May. Sancheong County's edition, running for decades, pairs the natural spectacle with a mountain climbing tournament, a singing contest, and markets selling local agricultural products to visitors hiking up for the flowers.
Hwangmaesan Mountain straddles the border between Sancheong and Hapcheon counties in South Gyeongsang Province, and each spring its upper slopes turn a deep pink as hundreds of thousands of square meters of royal azalea, known in Korean as cheoljjuk, come into bloom.
