Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival in Suwon
Suwon's autumn festival reenacts King Jeongjo's 1795 royal procession to Hwaseong Fortress, honoring his mother's sixtieth birthday and his father's tomb. Several thousand costumed participants recreate the eight-day journey and its court ceremonies against the backdrop of the fortress itself, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In 1795, King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty led an eight-day royal procession from Changdeokgung Palace in Hanyang to Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon, a journey undertaken to celebrate his mother Lady Hyegyeong-gung Hong's sixtieth birthday and to pay respects at the nearby tomb of his father, Crown Prince Sado, who had died under tragic and politically fraught circumstances decades earlier.
