Yeoncheon's spring festival marks the 1978 discovery of Acheulean hand axes at Jeongok-ri, a find that reshaped theories about prehistoric tool-making in Asia. Programs include flint-knapping, spear-throwing, fire-starting, and recreated Paleolithic dwellings, staged on the same basalt plateau where archaeological excavations continue to this day.

In 1978, a US serviceman named Greg Bowen picked up a stone hand axe near the Hantan River in Yeoncheon and, without quite meaning to, upended a long-standing theory in world archaeology.
