Yeosu Geobukseon Festival in Yeosu
Yeosu's turtle ship festival, timed to coincide with Children's Day, celebrates the geobukseon warships credited to Admiral Yi Sun-sin during the Imjin War. Programming includes a ship-drying reenactment, a youth drawing contest, and an overnight historical tour for teens, capped by an international fireworks competition over the harbor near Yi Sun-sin Square.
The turtle ship, or geobukseon, occupies a particular place in Korean naval history as one of the signature innovations credited to Admiral Yi Sun-sin, whose fleet used armored, dragon-headed warships to repel Japanese invasions during the Imjin War in the closing years of the sixteenth century.
