Almagro Classical Theatre Festival

Almagro's classical theatre festival, running each July since 1978, stages Spanish Golden Age drama inside the town's Corral de Comedias, a rare, largely intact seventeenth-century open-air public theatre rediscovered in the 1950s. Its programme of Lope de Vega, Calderon and international classical works draws directors specifically for the chance to perform in a genuine period venue.

Almagro's Corral de Comedias, a roofless, wood-galleried public theatre built in the seventeenth century and rediscovered largely intact behind a later facade in the 1950s, gives this small Castilian town one of the only surviving venues of its kind anywhere in the world and the reason its classical theatre festival has drawn international attention since its founding in 1978.
