Galle Music Festival in Galle
The Galle Music Festival, established around 2009 through a Sri Lanka-Norway cultural cooperation, alternates each edition between Galle Fort and Jaffna, bringing folk and traditional musicians together for roughly three days of open-air performances. Its Galle editions use the UNESCO World Heritage fort's courtyards and colonial buildings as informal concert venues, distinguishing it from Colombo's pop-oriented music festival.
Folk musicians from Sri Lanka and beyond take over courtyards and colonial halls inside Galle Fort when the Galle Music Festival comes to town, part of a joint Sri Lanka-Norway music initiative established around 2009 that alternates the festival's home each edition between the southern fort city of Galle and the northern city of Jaffna.
