The story

Nordea Open Bastad in Bastad

Nordea Open is Sweden's premier clay-court tennis tournament, held every July in the small seaside resort of Bastad on the Bjare peninsula. Combining an ATP men's event with a WTA women's tournament, it has drawn top international players to Bastad since the tournament's origins in the late 1940s, when it grew out of the town's summer holiday culture into one of the longest-running stops on the professional tennis calendar.

Tennis has been part of Bastad's summer identity since the town's grand hotels and tennis clubs made it a fashionable coastal retreat in the early twentieth century, and the tournament that grew out of that culture, long known as the Swedish Open, has been played since the late 1940s, making it one of the oldest continuously staged stops on the men's professional tour.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Bastad turns into Sweden's tennis capital for one week each July, when a town of a few thousand residents absorbs crowds for both ATP and WTA draws played on the same red clay courts

02

The mystery stays covered

The tournament markets itself as the Highlight of Summer, and its identity is inseparable from Bastad's genteel seaside setting: spectators move between matches and the town's beaches, harbor and tennis-club social scene in the same afternoon

03

The city starts moving

Recent champions have included Andrey Rublev, a multiple-time Bastad titleholder, and Paula Badosa on the women's side, keeping the event on the radar of the sport's current stars despite its small-town scale
