The story

Falun Ski Games in Falun

The Falun Ski Games, known in Swedish as Svenska Skidspelen, is an annual cross-country skiing event held at the Lugnet stadium in Falun each February or March. Founded in 1947 and based in Falun since 1959, it is one of the closing rounds of the FIS Cross-Country World Cup season.

In 1947, four nations, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Switzerland, gathered for the first Svenska Skidspelen in Sundsvall, an event organizers modeled directly on two events already drawing crowds elsewhere in the Nordic region: Norway's Holmenkollen Ski Festival and Finland's Lahti Ski Games.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Svenska Skidspelen began in Sundsvall in 1947, inspired directly by Norway's Holmenkollen Ski Festival and Finland's Lahti Ski Games, and rotated between several Swedish towns before a 1957 proposal from the Dalarna skiing association brought it to Falun on trial in 1959 and permanently soon after

02

The mystery stays covered

In its early decades the event also included ski jumping, Nordic combined, and briefly alpine skiing and biathlon, before narrowing to cross-country only from 1992 onward

03

The city starts moving

It has been part of the official FIS Cross-Country World Cup calendar every season since 1981-82, except when Falun instead hosts the Nordic World Ski Championships, giving the race a continuous competitive lineage that stretches back to the earliest years of organized Nordic ski racing in Sweden
