The story

DreamHack Summer in Jonkoping

DreamHack Summer was the June edition of DreamHack, the Swedish LAN party and esports festival that grew from a 1994 schoolyard gathering in Malung into one of the world's largest gaming events. From 2001 it filled Jonkoping's Elmia exhibition halls with thousands of gamers, their own PCs in tow, for round-the-clock esports tournaments, digital art contests and evening concerts across a single sprawling festival weekend.

DreamHack began humbly in the early 1990s as a small gathering of schoolmates in the basement of an elementary school in Malung, Sweden, built around demo-scene culture and shared computers.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

DreamHack Summer's defining feature was scale built from the ground up by attendees: every seated participant received a table, chair, power socket and LAN cable, then plugged in a PC or console hauled from home and slept in adjacent halls between matches

02

The mystery stays covered

The event set Guinness World Records for fastest internet connection and highest data traffic at a gaming gathering

03

The city starts moving

Esports tournaments with prize pools exceeding three million kronor ran alongside DreamHack Kreativ digital-art competitions, an expo hall where studios let visitors test unreleased games, and nightly concerts, all staffed by roughly 800 volunteer crew members working around the clock
