The story

Vatternrundan in Motala/Lake Vattern

Vatternrundan is a 315-kilometer cyclosportive held annually over two weekends in June, circling Lake Vattern with start and finish in Motala. First run in 1966, it is one of the largest recreational cycling events in Europe and a core leg of the Swedish Classic Circuit.

Lake Vattern, Sweden's second-largest lake, has a near-circular shoreline long enough to make a genuinely demanding cycling loop, and since 1966 that loop has anchored one of Europe's largest recreational cycling events.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Vatternrundan's defining feature is its scale and structure: riders set off in staggered groups of 60 to 70 at two-minute intervals, beginning at 7:30 pm on Friday evening and continuing through the night until roughly 5:30 am Saturday, with the course required to be finished by midnight Saturday

02

The mystery stays covered

In 2011, 27,973 cyclists crossed the finish line across its three main distances, with around 20 percent of participants from outside Sweden and 37 nations represented that year alone

03

The city starts moving

Since 2010 the event has also offered faster groups a later Saturday-morning start, letting riders expecting to finish under nine hours avoid the largest overnight crowds

04

The water draws everyone in

As a non-competitive event measured on completion, it prioritizes participation at massive scale over racing
