The story

Oland Roots in Oland

Oland Roots is one of Sweden's three largest annual reggae festivals, held near the small village of Stora Fro on the island of Oland since 2004. Founded by a group of friends from the Morbylanga area, it has grown into a roots-reggae gathering that also embraces ska, soca and other Caribbean-rooted styles, drawing around 7,000 visitors a year to hear both international reggae legends and Sweden's home-grown reggae scene.

Oland Roots began in 2004, started by a group of young friends from around Morbylanga who wanted to bring a proper reggae festival to their part of the island rather than travel to hear the music elsewhere.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Oland Roots has built a lineup history that punches well above its rural island setting: past performers include Michael Rose, former lead singer of the influential reggae band Black Uhuru, the ska and reggae pioneers Toots and the Maytals, Wailers co-founder Bunny Wailer, and the deejay pioneer U-Roy, alongside Peps Persson, the Swedish musician credited with introducing reggae to Sweden in 1974

02

The mystery stays covered

Nearly every notable Swedish reggae act, from Kultiration to Ital Skurk, has played its stages

03

The city starts moving

Organized by a nonprofit association that also runs other cultural events in Kalmar county, the festival has kept its focus on roots reggae's socially conscious tradition while widening into ska, soca and hip hop over its run
