Baltic Sea Festival Stockholm

Baltic Sea Festival Stockholm is an international classical and contemporary music festival based at the Berwaldhallen concert hall, founded in 2002 by conductors Esa-Pekka Salonen and Valery Gergiev together with Berwaldhallen's concert-hall chief Michael Tyden. Run in partnership with Swedish Radio each August and September since its first program in 2003, it pairs high-level orchestral performances with an explicit environmental mission focused on the ecological health of the Baltic Sea region.

Baltic Sea Festival Stockholm was founded in 2002 by three figures with direct stakes in both classical music and the Baltic Sea region's future: Michael Tyden, then chief of the Berwaldhallen concert hall, the conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen, and the Russian conductor Valery Gergiev, head of the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, whose international standing helped the fledgling festival draw major orchestras and soloists from its earliest years.
