The story

Medieval Week Gotland in Visby

Medieval Week Gotland, known locally as Medeltidsveckan, transforms the Hanseatic walled town of Visby into a week-long medieval reenactment each August, held annually since 1984. The 2026 edition runs August 2 to 9, filling the UNESCO World Heritage old town with jousting tournaments, costumed camps, craft markets and open-air performances.

Medieval Week Gotland began on August 5, 1984, and has run every year since inside Visby, the walled Hanseatic trading town on the Swedish island of Gotland that UNESCO added to its World Heritage list in 1995.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's theme is anchored in a specific historical event: the 1361 sack of Visby by Danish king Valdemar Atterdag, whose siege and its aftermath give the week its dramatic throughline within the actual medieval ruins and ring wall still standing in the city

02

The mystery stays covered

Organizers describe it as the world's best medieval week, running continuously since its founding on August 5, 1984

03

The city starts moving

The event spreads across more than twenty numbered festival areas inside and around Visby, including a dedicated jousting arena, viking encampments, multiple ruin-church performance stages, and a modern campground, making it one of the largest sustained historical reenactment gatherings in Northern Europe
