Hengchun Folk Song Festival in Hengchun
A festival celebrating Hengchun folk song, or Hengchun minyao, a distinct oral singing tradition from the Hengchun Peninsula at Taiwan's southern tip, built around improvised, often melancholic verses traditionally accompanied by a moon-shaped lute called the yueqin; the tradition gained wider national attention after featuring in the popular Taiwanese film Cape No. 7.
Hengchun sits at the southernmost tip of Taiwan's main island, a peninsula historically isolated enough by mountains and distance from the island's political centers that its folk culture developed distinct local characteristics, among them a tradition of improvised sung verse known as Hengchun folk song or Hengchun minyao.
