Miaoli Fire Side Dragon Festival in Miaoli City

Miaoli's dragon-bombing custom, formally Pang-liung and commonly called dragon-bombing in casual usage, is a Hakka Lantern Festival tradition in which a dragon-dance troupe parades through Miaoli City while crowds fire strings of firecrackers directly at the dragon and its bearers. Actively organized by the Miaoli City Office since 1998, it has run continuously for over two decades.

Taiwanese media has a shorthand for the island's four or five most intense Lantern Festival traditions, and Miaoli's dragon-bombing custom, formally Pang-liung, occupies the center of it: sky lanterns released in the north at Pingxi, dragon-bombing in the middle at Miaoli, beehive fireworks fired into crowds in the south at Yanshui, deity-bombing in the east at Taitung, and turtle-begging in the west at Penghu.
