The story

Hakka Tung Blossom Festival in Multiple towns

The Hakka Tung Blossom Festival, organized annually since 2002 by Taiwan's Hakka Affairs Council, celebrates the springtime bloom of tung oil trees across Hakka-populated townships in Miaoli, Hsinchu, Taoyuan and other counties. Falling white blossoms carpeting hillside trails in what locals call May Snow anchor weeks of hiking events, Hakka food and craft markets, and cultural performances spread across multiple towns each April and May.

Across the hill townships of Miaoli, Hsinchu, Taoyuan and several other counties in northern and central Taiwan, late April brings a distinctive seasonal transformation: tung oil trees, planted across these hillsides generations ago, burst into white blossom and then shed their petals in such volume that fallen flowers blanket trails and hillsides in a layer locals have long called May Snow.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Rather than a single fixed venue, the festival unfolds simultaneously across dozens of Hakka townships in northern and central Taiwan, each hosting its own local events timed to the peak bloom of tung trees on its own hillsides, making the celebration as much a coordinated regional identity campaign as a single festival

02

The mystery stays covered

The tung tree itself carries a layered history in Taiwan, introduced during the Japanese colonial era for its oil-producing seeds and later becoming so closely associated with Hakka hillside communities that its blossom is now treated as a symbol of Hakka culture itself, giving the falling white petals, likened to a late-spring snow, deep cultural resonance beyond their visual appeal
