International Shashmaqom Festival in Dushanbe
The International Shashmaqom Festival in Dushanbe celebrates Shashmaqom, the six-suite classical maqom tradition of Central Asia rooted in historic Bukhara, bringing performers from countries including Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, China, Iran, and Uzbekistan to the Tajik capital for a multi-day program of concerts and scholarly discussion of the tradition's preservation.
Shashmaqom, literally the six maqoms, is one of the great classical music traditions of the Persianate and Turkic world, developed over centuries in the courts and urban centers of Bukhara and shared today primarily between Tajik and Uzbek musical culture, since both nations trace their classical heritage to that same historic city.
