The story

Roof of the World Festival in Khorog

The Roof of the World Festival is an annual celebration of Pamiri and Central Asian culture held each July in Khorog Central Park, in Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan region. Since its founding in 2008, it has brought together musicians, dancers, and craftspeople from the Tajik Pamirs alongside performers from Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and beyond.

Khorog sits at the bottom of a steep river valley in Gorno-Badakhshan, reached by a long drive along the Pamir Highway through some of the most dramatic mountain terrain in Central Asia.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets this festival apart is its explicitly cross-border character: performers travel from across the river in Afghanistan as well as from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and western China to share a single stage with Pamiri Tajik artists, making it one of the few regular events in Central Asia built around Pamiri identity specifically rather than a single national culture

02

The mystery stays covered

Set in Khorog, a remote mountain town reachable mainly by the Pamir Highway, the festival draws thousands of visitors who might not otherwise travel to Gorno-Badakhshan, combining music, dance, food, and handicrafts from a region whose traditions differ markedly from lowland Tajik culture
