Mwaka Kogwa is a Shirazi and Swahili New Year celebration held each July in Makunduchi, a village in southeastern Zanzibar, marking the new year with ritual mock battles, the burning of a specially built hut, and predictions for the coming year based on the direction of the rising smoke.

Makunduchi is a village on the southeastern tip of Unguja, Zanzibar's main island, and for one gathering each July it becomes the center of one of the archipelago's oldest surviving public rituals.
