The story

Kilimanjaro Marathon in Moshi

The Kilimanjaro Marathon is an annual road race through Moshi, Tanzania, in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, founded in 2003 and now run in full marathon, half marathon, and 5-kilometer fun-run categories. Organized under the tagline The People's Race, or Mbio Ya Watu, it draws Tanzanian and international runners and channels part of its proceeds into local charitable projects through its Run for Good program.

Moshi is the town most climbers pass through on their way up Mount Kilimanjaro, a farming and coffee-trading center built on the mountain's southern slopes.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few marathons anywhere run with Africa's tallest mountain as a backdrop the way the Kilimanjaro Marathon does, with Mount Kilimanjaro's snow-capped profile visible from stretches of the course through Moshi

02

The mystery stays covered

Since its founding in 2003 the race has grown into one of the region's best-known running events, drawing enough international entrants that the full marathon now serves as an official qualifying race for South Africa's Comrades Marathon

03

The city starts moving

Beyond the sport, organizers built a charitable arm, Run for Good, into the event's identity

04

The water draws everyone in

past editions have channeled proceeds into causes such as funding treatment for children with cancer, so runners are effectively fundraising for Tanzanian communities as they race
