The story

Phimai Festival in Phimai

The Phimai Festival transforms the thousand-year-old Khmer ruins of Phimai Historical Park in Nakhon Ratchasima into a nightly stage for light, sound, and story. Held every November, it combines a multimedia projection show across the ancient sandstone sanctuary with Royal Trophy longboat races, giving visitors both a historical spectacle after dark and a competitive river tradition by day.

Prasat Hin Phimai was built between the 11th and 13th centuries as a Khmer religious sanctuary, its sandstone towers and galleries laid out on the same north-south axis later echoed at Angkor Wat, and connected to the Khmer capital by an ancient road that ran for well over a hundred kilometers.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Phimai's sanctuary, Prasat Hin Phimai, is one of the largest and best-preserved Khmer temple complexes outside Cambodia, predating Angkor Wat by decades

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival uses that authenticity directly: rather than building a temporary stage, organizers project lasers, music, and dramatized narration onto the temple's original stone facades, turning centuries-old carvings into a living backdrop for a story about the Khmer empire's reach into what is now northeastern Thailand

03

The city starts moving

The same week pairs this after-dark spectacle with a very different, daytime tradition: Royal Trophy longboat races on the river beside the park, so the festival covers both the region's ancient Khmer heritage and its living Thai boat-racing culture in a single event
