The story

Dili International Marathon in Dili

The Dili International Marathon is Timor-Leste's flagship annual sporting event, a World Athletics-certified, AIMS-accredited race along Dili's waterfront rooted in President Jose Ramos-Horta's Dili, City of Peace initiative. The 2026 edition marks its tenth running, expecting more than 5,000 participants from over 30 countries under the theme Love Our Forests and Wildlife.

The Dili International Marathon grew out of President Jose Ramos-Horta's Dili, City of Peace initiative, a nation-branding and peacebuilding campaign that took shape around 2009 and 2010, in the same period that produced Timor-Leste's other flagship international participation event, the Tour de Timor mountain bike race.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few events in Timor-Leste carry this level of independent verification and international infrastructure: the race is officially World Athletics-certified and AIMS-accredited, placing it among a small number of Southeast Asian marathons meeting global technical standards, and it has grown from its origins around 2009 to a tenth anniversary edition in 2026 with a named corporate sponsor, BRI Timor-Leste, and elite and regional-influencer participants confirmed by name in recent press coverage

02

The mystery stays covered

Its founding ties directly to Ramos-Horta's Dili, City of Peace campaign, giving the race a deliberate peacebuilding and nation-branding purpose beyond athletics, and a dedicated Para-Athletes category in the 10km distance signals an unusually inclusive event structure for a young country's biggest race
