The story

FESTHEF Festival de Theatre de la Fraternite in Assahoun/Lome

FESTHEF, the Festival de Theatre de la Fraternite, is a Togolese theater festival held in the Assahoun quarter of Lome. Since at least 1993 it has brought together playwrights, actors and directors from Togo and neighboring French-speaking African countries for a juried competition awarding prizes such as the Prix de la Fraternite and Prix du meilleur comedien.

Founded in 1993, the Festival de Theatre de la Fraternite, known as FESTHEF, grew out of Lome's small but resilient community theater scene during a period when Togo's Francophone stage artists had few dedicated platforms of their own.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

FESTHEF functions as a launching pad for West African Francophone theater talent: Togolese actor Roger Atikpo won its best actor prize in 1995 and 2003, the troupe Kadam-Kadam was honored in 2000 for the play Le Chien royal, and playwright Gustave Akakpo received its junior writers prize, Plumes Togolaises

02

The mystery stays covered

Held in the Assahoun neighborhood rather than Lome's central tourist districts, the festival keeps a grassroots, community feel, with performances staged in modest halls or courtyards and judged by juries drawn from Togo's small but active playwriting and acting community
