World Steelpan Festival in Port of Spain
The T&T Steelband Music Festival, organized in Port of Spain by Pan Trinbago (the self-described world governing body for the steelpan), gathers the country's top orchestras to compete in Single Pan, Ensemble and Orchestra categories, judged on original and classical arrangements rather than Carnival road tunes.
Trinidad's steelpan grew out of Carnival street bands experimenting with tuned oil drums in the 1930s and 1940s, and by the 1960s its players wanted to prove the instrument belonged in a concert hall as much as on a Carnival truck.
