The Journees Romaines d'El Jem, also called Festival Thysdrus after the ancient Roman name for El Jem, turns the town's UNESCO-listed amphitheatre into a live Roman reenactment for a weekend each spring. Gladiator combat displays, costumed processions, and hands-on ancient-history workshops recreate life in what was once one of the largest Roman arenas in Africa, reaching an eighth edition in 2025 with support from local crowdfunding.

El Jem's amphitheatre is one of the best-preserved Roman arenas anywhere in the Mediterranean world, a third-century structure that once seated tens of thousands of spectators in what was then Thysdrus, a wealthy Roman city built on the olive oil trade of Roman Africa.
