The story

Sidi Bou Makhlouf Festival in Le Kef

The Festival International Bou Makhlouf takes over El Kef's hilltop kasbah each summer, named for Sidi Bou Makhlouf, the Moroccan-born Sufi saint whose 17th-century mausoleum overlooks the old town. Since the 1970s the festival has staged live music, traditional Andalusian and Sufi performances, and craft and food markets across the fortress grounds, drawing residents of the mountainous northwest and visitors touring Tunisia's Berber heritage towns.

El Kef sits on a steep hillside in Tunisia's mountainous northwest, close enough to the Algerian border that its architecture and dialect carry a distinct regional flavor.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets the Bou Makhlouf Festival apart is its setting: performances unfold inside and around the Kasbah of El Kef, an Ottoman-era hilltop fortress built over Byzantine and Roman foundations, with the whitewashed dome of the Sidi Bou Makhlouf mausoleum-mosque as a backdrop

02

The mystery stays covered

Unlike coastal festivals built around imported pop acts, the program leans on regional malouf music, Sufi chanting, and folk troupes from Tunisia's interior, reflecting El Kef's role as a crossroads of Berber, Arab, and Andalusian culture near the Algerian border

03

The city starts moving

Running since the mid-1970s and reaching a 46th edition in 2022, it is one of the longest-running regional festivals outside Tunis or Carthage, giving the northwest a cultural stage of its own
