The story

Festival International de Matmata in Matmata

The Festival International du Patrimoine Culturel de Matmata, commonly shortened to Festival International de Matmata, is an annual spring heritage festival organized by the Association de Sauvegarde de Matmata since the early 2000s. Held in a region famous for troglodyte underground Berber dwellings, it features traditional Amazigh singing, popular poetry and Sufi dancing performed by Tunisian, Algerian and Libyan folkloric troupes.

Matmata is known internationally for its troglodyte architecture, homes carved into the ground around large open pits to escape the region's extreme heat, and for the Amazigh, or Berber, communities who have lived that way for generations.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Matmata is known internationally for its troglodyte architecture, homes carved into the ground around large open pits to escape the region's extreme heat, and its Berber, or Amazigh, cultural heritage

02

The mystery stays covered

the festival, run by the Association de Sauvegarde de Matmata since around 2003, exists specifically to keep that heritage active rather than only preserved as a tourist attraction

03

The city starts moving

Its 15th edition in 2023 drew more than 18,700 visitors, a striking figure for a small desert town, and one recent edition was themed Land Art et Resistance, connecting the festival's Berber heritage focus to contemporary environmental and cultural-preservation concerns

04

The water draws everyone in

Programming draws folkloric troupes from Tunisia, Algeria and Libya, reflecting Amazigh culture's presence across North Africa rather than a purely local tradition
