The story

Testour Malouf Festival in Testour

The Festival International du Malouf de Testour, founded in 1967, is widely described as Tunisia's oldest traditional-music festival. Held each July in the northwestern town of Testour, itself founded by Andalusian Muslim refugees, it is devoted entirely to malouf, Tunisia's Arab-Andalusian classical music tradition, combining a competitive training program for young musicians with evening concerts by Tunisian and Maghrebi artists.

When Muslims were expelled from Spain in the early seventeenth century, one wave of refugees resettled a town in the Mejerda valley of northern Tunisia that came to be called Testour, building an urban and architectural identity that still visibly echoes Andalusia today, most famously in a mosque whose clock face has long been described as running in reverse.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This is the only major Tunisian festival dedicated exclusively to a single musical genre with a direct historical link to its host town: Testour was resettled in the seventeenth century by Andalusian Muslims expelled from Spain, and malouf, the classical repertoire they carried with them, has been the town's defining musical inheritance since

02

The mystery stays covered

Founded in 1967, the festival reached a 59th edition in July 2025, making it, by most accounts, Tunisia's oldest traditional-music festival

03

The city starts moving

Alongside concerts by Tunisian, Libyan and Algerian artists, it runs a competitive and pedagogical program to train younger musicians

04

The water draws everyone in

In a striking recent development, the planned 60th edition, scheduled for July 2026, was officially cancelled by the organizing committee, which cited internal disputes and outside interference
