Kakava Festival Edirne in Edirne
Every May 5-6, the Roma community of Edirne leads Kakava, a riverside spring festival held at the Sarayici Peninsula on the Tunca River. Rooted in the belief that a redeemer figure called Baba Fingo once led the Roma out of Egypt, the festival blends bonfire-jumping, river rituals, music, and dance with the wider Turkish welcome-to-spring tradition of Hidirellez.
On the banks of the Tunca River, on the Sarayici Peninsula where wrestlers have grappled at the Kirkpinar tournament for centuries, Edirne's Roma community gathers each May 5th and 6th for Kakava, a festival that marks the turn from winter to spring with fire, water, and a story found nowhere else in Turkey's calendar of seasonal celebrations.
