The story

Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Festival in Edirne

The Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Festival in Edirne is the world's oldest continuously held sporting event, dating to the 14th century. Held annually, usually in late June or early July, at Sarayici, wrestlers known as pehlivans, coated in olive oil, compete over three days for the Golden Belt and the title of Chief Pehlivan.

Long before most of today's professional sports leagues existed, wrestlers were already gathering each summer near Edirne, in Turkey's northwestern corner near the Greek and Bulgarian borders, for a tournament that has now run, by most accounts, continuously since 1357 or 1362, deep in the Ottoman Empire's earliest expansion into Europe, years before the conquest of Constantinople.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Kirkpinar has run for over 660 years, recognized by UNESCO on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list, giving it a claim few sporting events anywhere can match: continuous operation since the Ottomans' 14th-century expansion into Europe, before the conquest of Istanbul itself

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival's ceremonial opening, forty bands of davul drums and zurna shawms marching in behind the event's patron, the Kirkpinar Aga, gives even the tournament's start a distinct processional character, and wrestlers competing while slicked in olive oil, grappling in loose leather trousers called kispet, makes the sport itself visually unlike almost any other wrestling tradition
