The story

Istanbul Marathon in Istanbul

Held annually since 1979, the Istanbul Marathon is the world's only marathon crossing two continents in a single race, starting on the Asian side near the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, crossing into Europe, and finishing at Inonu Stadium after passing the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. It earned IAAF Gold Label status in 2012.

Since 1979, runners in Istanbul have had the chance to do something no other marathon in the world offers: cross from one continent to another on foot, in a single race, without ever leaving the same city.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The marathon's intercontinental course is genuinely unique among major world marathons: runners cross from Asia to Europe over the Bosphorus bridge before finishing near two of Istanbul's most recognized landmarks, the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia

02

The mystery stays covered

Its accompanying mass public run has drawn extraordinary numbers, including a record 150,000 participants in 1998, and the event has offered prize pools reaching 1 million US dollars

03

The city starts moving

Course records stand at 2 hours 9 minutes 44 seconds for men (Daniel Kibet, 2019) and 2 hours 18 minutes 35 seconds for women (Ruth Chepngetich, 2018), and the race gained World Athletics Gold Label status in 2012, the same year it shifted from an October to a November date
